Widnes and Runcorn are both well-established towns with easy access to Manchester and Liverpool creating an area where the benefits of city living are readily available, but without the prohibitive living costs and other drawbacks associated with urban sprawl.
Widnes and Hough Green railway stations are on the Liverpool to Manchester line. Two main roads run through the town; the A557 heading north and south, and the A562 taking care of the east-west traffic. Two main bus operators, Halton Transport and Arriva provide access to the local area.
Widnes is primarily an industrial town, with its major output being in chemicals. There has been development of shopping centres with the Greenoaks Centre situated next to the Widnes Market, consisting of major shopping retailers.
